The best films of 2006

Men, I want to go to the movies and see a great flick on the big screen so bad! The best home theater equipment in the world can not replace this unique experience! Andrew called and asked me which my favorite movies of last year were. I didn’t really have to think hard to tell him that my favorites were “Babel” , “The Departed” (Scorsese is so overdue with a “Oscar” award!), “Science Of Sleep” (great performance by Gael Garcia-Barnal) and “Scoop” (Woody Allen’s wonderful murder mystery). He also wanted to know if I agree with the Top 5 list of the website BigPictureBigSound which listed the following movies:
Volver
It’s appropriate that the title of this Pedro Almodóvar film translates as “to come back” since it signals a return to form for the famously female-centric director.
Letters from Iwo Jima / Flags of our fathers
A rare tie, but a well-deserved one for Clint Eastwood’s epic meditation on war from both sides of the battle lines.
The Queen
Helen Mirren’s flawless performance in the title role is the crowning glory of director Stephen Frears’ piercing portrayal of the British monarchy in the wake of Princess Diana’s death.
Little Miss Sunshine
A family is off in search of a beauty contest victory for their youngest member and it’s a trip you don’t want to miss.
Pan’s Labyrinth
Beautiful but relentlessly grim fairytale about a young girl who finds refuge in a world of mythical creatures at the end of the Spanish Civil War.
I agree with most of the choices, but a lot of other great movies are missing! Andrew told me that his neighbor also got an injury and has to stay home - and he enjoys watching his favorite movies on his brandnew Denon S-101. Good for him!
